experiential learning
One of the largest aspects of the Honors Program is the completion of Honors experiences. Honors experiences come in many different forms and can be specialized to the interests of a particular students. The Honors Program has established five thematic areas for the classification of experiences, which are: Community Engagement, Global Studies, Leadership, Research, and Creative Arts. It is the intention of the Honors program, through the completion of a variety of experiences, that students will have unique opportunities throughout their time at UC that encourage them to be more balanced, respectful, intelligent, and reflective.
Honors seminars are courses that challenge and broaden the intellectual horizons of honors students at all levels, regardless of the disciplines in which students are majoring. These seminars align with one or more of the thematic areas of University Honors and engage students in active and experiential learning. Experiential components may include service-learning, domestic or international study tours, visits to sites in local communities, integration of lab work, or other activities in which students are actively engaged in learning outside of the typical classroom setting.
Individual experiential learning projects are an ideal way for students to fulfill University Honors requirements. The fundamental idea behind experiential learning is the individual student’s engagement in an activity or program that has been designed to initiate the process of inquiry and understanding.
